Typefaces

The above font is called Feast of Flesh, which caught my eye as it is three main things which an eye catching title should include; Bold, Big and powerful. Furthermore, the font is very easy to read which I felt is very important as it helps more possible and interested viewers identify the poster, where ever is maybe allocated in order to advertise the event, and this is important for those who place perfection in their work as a number one decision maker when choosing what developing a title for a poster.

This font is called Treasure and I believe that this font will work well as a title due to the fairly bold lettering as well as the formality of basic lettering it shows. Due to my magazine being aimed at the large age range from kids to adults, I want a passing viewer to not feel as if the show would not be suitable for whatever age they may be.
This font is called You Murderer. I was very interested in this font because the style of the writing links to the horror genre directly due to the rough and distorted lettering. There is also a liquid which seems to be dripping off the text which can be associated with blood. This will be highly effective for my poster due to the direct link and connotations the text gives off which is similar to horror characteristics too.

This above typeface is called blood gutter 2000, I find that it is too basic for an adventurous and creative poster I would like to produce in order to attract a large number of viewers. The typeface is far too simple and although it initializes that it is a horror themed font I think it has been created effortlessly hence looked unrealistic. Due to the reasons stated above I find it very difficult to picture this typeface on an astonishing poster I will create therefore I will not use it.
This font is called Meltdown MF. This font caught my eye because it is bald and still adds in the characteristics needed in order to make it look like a title for a horror genre poster. I particularly like the face that I will be able to colour the inside of the typeface on photo shop and even change the colour of the outline if I wish. In regards to my targeted audience I think the font fits well with the wide age group as it may come across as a childlike font yet formal as it is bald and easy to read with its clarity but in a creative method.
This font is called Ghost Writer. What particularly and instantly interested me in this font is that fact that it looks like it has been stamped on and in the 1950’s, when she show is set, a majority of people used to create typefaces using tools such as stamps, typewriter etc. Moreover, although it is fairly simple and basic, with a little bit of photo shop work done upon it, it can look very mysterious and this, in my opinion, is a highly effective characteristic to use in a font for my chosen genre and especially to attract an audience.

The font above is called It Lives in the Swamp, this font to me looked very similar to the font Meltdown MF and due to its similarity I was also interested in this font. I noticed that it looked like a “new and improved” version of Meltdown MF only to be produced balder, scarier – with a more realistic look of blood dripping from the text and creepier font.  It is a conventional font and fits perfectly with all the characteristics needed which would flow fluently, alongside the pictures and other texts, on the poster well.

Typography Experimentations

For every show an audience is needed and for an audience to know there is a show, it needs to be advertised. And so to urge people to attend the event of the ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ production we decided to produce posters which would be located around the school and around the community where people could easily become aware of the event. We took in to account:

      ·         The poster needed to be easy to read so that one walking past could take in all the main details, and could possibly approach the poster for further details.
·         It needed to attract the students and teachers, meaning a broader age range
·         It had to include the copyright information for legal reasons
·         The theme of the show which we wanted to visually communicate through the posters using the right colors (research color connotations)
·          What images could set the atmosphere of the production on a 2D layout
To begin with, after many discussions based on how we could create the poster we decided to experiment with various layouts, typography, images, colors etc for the best result.
I started off with experimenting and looking in to a wide range of typography. I created my own freestyle using different materials and also created some titles digitally. Within my typography experimentations I used different themes using visual metaphors for example, one where I have used red ink dripping down as if it were blood. I also looked at different layouts for the title ‘Little Shop of Horrors’.  In my freestyle and digital experimentation I used a lot of green and red which relates to the plant (Audry II) and danger. Many of the typographies worked very well and lead me to more ideas that I could work with and improve on.

Experiment: Poster design

This is a poster is designed and created using Photoshop. Although it needs a lot of improving and development I can already notice that the layout works really well. It is a very basic design and as it is a lively musical production I would improve the poster by making it look more lively, maybe by adding a background. In relation the background could pin point on the poster that it is set in 1980's New York. The colours are really vibrant and consists of good grading.

Poster layout design

In order to produce a poster we contributed, within our groups, our very own ideas. I was able to draw up three of my ideas I believe had a good potential to work really well. As it’s a rough idea which will need to be pitched to the group I have briefly written why and what I have chosen and where it should composition on the poster.

My first idea (image above) is a strong cover which gives away the genre of the show and also the concept (scary plant scaring away a boy and girl, main characters, in a shop.)  I have briefly analyzed the colors connotatively and illustrated why I have chosen them. I think this poster design idea works well because it gives the viewer an idea of the concept of the show and this is the breaking point if whether they would be interested of not. The pictures are nicely laid out on top of a brick wall; I got this idea whilst looking at my mood board and so I can instantly see this gives a 1950’s New York feel. I would however improve the title, if I could change it I would chose something which relates to the genre of the show as the pictures already do.
My second idea (image about) is of the plant alone, in my opinion I think this is a bit of a teaser as it doesn’t give away who or what else may be involved in the show and this is a great technique to interest a passing viewer. By looking back at my resources, the mood board, I decided to use a typical 1950’s New York kitchen tile as a background. I decided to use it because as I would want the plant to be painted in detail to look very realistic I wanted it to stand against something not to ‘busy’ to show a great contrast. The title is a bit ‘shaky’ and distorted and this is to show the fear. If I chose to go ahead with this design I would need to thoroughly think what colors should be used for the best result.

My third idea (image above) is of the location of where most of the show takes place which is the shop, the plant and the two main characters. Although I think the layout of the poster works well I believe to improve it I would need to re consider the sizes of the characters. I would also continue to use an image of Audrey II the plant however re scale and use a different image which shows more emotion. Again in this design I would have to choose a good bunch of colors which would go well and be able to grade them too. As the title is a bubble written bald text I think it would contrast clearly against the variety of images in the poster.
